The film was in production in December 21, 2014 to July 7, 2015. The film would used the screenplay from 1995's Toy Story. Kick and his friends were originally going to be teenagers, but Chris doesn't like it. He decided to keep Kick and his friends into kids. Charlie Schlatter can't voice Kick anymore, so Jeremy Shada voiced him with his Finn voice. On, April 30, 2015, the film was pushed to November 13, 2015 to avoid competition with another film to be released. On the same day, Geo Media announced to make feature films based on Hasbro properties.
It also features a scene where Kick pushes Clyde off the window and the rainbooms threw him out of his room. This is a similarity to Toy Story's Black Friday reel.
On July 21, 2015, Geo Media has decided that the film will have a direct-to-DVD release in the United States on November 13, 2015 while it is set for a theatrical release outside the United States by Disney.

- Clyde saying "Bronies are people too!" is replaced with "Ponies are people, dude!"
- Mild language is change into kiddie-friendly language due to Disney's family rule
- The song "S-T-R-Awberry" was replaced by "Kick Buttowski's Song of Awesomeness" this was used in the end credits.
- Despite the US Paramount Pictures release, The 2011 version of the 2006 Disney logo was used at the end.
Geo Media announces for a new TV series entitled Kick & Gunther: Rainboom Dudes. It will air on Nickelodeon.
